The Problem: High histamine foods

Many migraineurs have a deficiency in the enzyme diamine oxidase or DAO. This is an enzyme that breaks down the histamine that naturally occurs in many foods. Histamine is a biogenic amine with many roles in the immune response and the nervous system. We are most familiar with histamine role in allergies where it causes fatigue, itchy eyes, and a runny nose or even difficulty breathing. If we have eaten foods that cause a histamine response we may get bloating, nausea, constipation, or diarrhea. We also get headaches and can feel like we are trying to think through a fog. It may be difficult to sleep but we may be tired all the time. The connection between migraine and dietary histamine is only newly recognized.

 

A study of people on a low histamine diet with chronic headaches showed that “73.3% of people “improved considerably”. Eight had no headache at all”.

Eliminate trigger foods that are commonly associated with migraines

The Doering Protocol Diet is a 9-week Protocol that removes the most common high histamine foods from your diet for about 4 weeks. Don’t worry, you have plenty of support to make sure that you are successful and to talk about “special” occasions. This will give your body a rest from the histamine overload.

I have over 20 years of nursing experience. After working in a large neurology practice, I discovered a love and talent for the care and education of persons with headache and migraine.
